Meet our Captains & Crew

Captain Monroe in sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat sits on a boat with the ocean and clear sky in the background.
  • Born and raised in Haiku, Maui, Monroe attended the University of Hawaii, Manoa and received a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences. He grew up working on boats in Ma’alaea harbor. He enjoys spending time with his wife and 3 young children, taking them surfing, sailing lessons, and fishing. Monroe is also Kelly’s older brother.

Captain Kelly smiling at the helm, wearing a gray cap, blue sunglasses, and a white long-sleeve shirt outdoors with a cloudy sky background.
  • At 19, Kelly’s first command as captain was a 100’ triple engine charter boat. Born and raised in Haiku, Maui, Kelly has spent his entire career on the water captaining snorkel charters, whale watches, and fishing charters. He is Maui Custom Charter’s chief engineering manager. Kelly’s hobbies include fixing boats ;), hunting, fishing, and assisting with shark tagging projects. Cool fact: Kelly once rescued 5 scuba divers who had been swept out to sea from Molokini and lost for 5 hours.

Captain Anna wearing a patterned baseball cap, sunglasses, a blue jacket, and a neck gaiter, smiling outdoors under a canopy with a blurred background of a sports field and chain-link fence.
  • Born and raised in Hana, Maui, Anna traveled to the east coast to attend Brown University and obtained a degree in marine science. She then returned home and has worked on the water since 2007 as crew and captain for power catamarans and as an underwater photographer for a humpback whale research group. Most of her time has been spent off the coast of Maui, but she has also worked in Washington, Florida, and the south Pacific. In her free time, Anna loves to cook, surf, dive, hunt, and spend time with her family and friends in Hana.

  • Captain JJ was born and raised in Arizona but left the desert heat for Maui in 2014. In 2018 he started crewing on power catamarans and quickly fell in love with the ocean and everything it has to offer. JJ obtained his PADI divemaster in 2020 and then his USCG 100 ton captain’s license in 2024. If you’re cruising around the island you may find him playing beach games with friends and enjoying the sunset on his days off.

OUR STORY

With a history of fishing and driving boats from a young age, our ‘ohana has been sharing their passion of ocean adventure with family and friends from all around the world.

Maui Fun Charters was started by two local boys, Kelly and Monroe, who were born & raised in deep Haiku, Maui. They grew up in a jungle shack, biking in the cane fields, swimming in the EMI ditches and fishing off the North Shore. In diapers, their mom would take the boys down to Ma’alaea to watch their dad, Kimmy Bryce, a well known fishing captain in Ma’alaea come in with the days catch.

As soon as the boys could handle long days on the boat, Kimmy would take the boys out fishing. Kimmy’s dream was to build a family-run fishing charter business. Unfortunately, he would not be able to realize his dream as he passed when his boys were barely out of their teens.

But, in 2004, over 20 years after Kimmy put the family name on the commercial permit list for Ma’alaea harbor, they came up as next available for a spot. This was the chance of a lifetime - literally! With limited experience of being business owners themselves, Monroe and Kelly decided to dive head first and do the only thing they really knew how to do … fishing. So, in the early part of 2005, they took the original Marjorie Ann, knowledge and lifetime of personal experience and created Maui Fun Charters.

Kelly wearing sunglasses, a beige cap, a white long-sleeve shirt, and red shorts, sitting at the helm of a boat with a large steering wheel and navigational controls, in a bright outdoor setting with a partly cloudy sky visible through the windows.

In the very beginning, it was far from “smooth sailing”, it was rough. Being brand new, it was hard to compete against well-known and established boat companies, and to make any profit with booking agents taking insane commissions. Maybe they’d get 1-2 charters a week. For 6 straight years, every charter they got was just the two of them, working together side by side. From 6am to 2pm, it was load up the ice and bait, meet and greet the passengers, take them out on a four hour bottom fishing trip, try to find the best spots with the best fish and the best weather. Dealing with everything from sea sick passengers, to over zealous fisherman, to bad weather, to boat break downs, repairs and dry-docks, they stuck to a model that worked and just kept plugging away.

And it worked! In 2010 their business was finally hitting its stride and it was time to upgrade the original Marjorie Ann. They found the perfect boat in Maryland…the next challenge: custom build a trailer, ship it to Maryland, load up the boat, hitch it up to a big rig, drive it across the country, and then put it on to a big ship across the Pacific…

On December 20th 2012, after 2 years of planning, 20 days & over 5,000 miles of travel, the new 36’ Chesapeake Bay Deadrise, Marjorie Ann was launched into Ma'alaea Harbor and started running trips New Years day 2013. Through the ups and downs Maui Fun Charters has excelled through sheer grit and determination and has built a team of extraordinary captains and crew.
